But, at what extent urban voids are really empty and, above all, from whose point of view? The relations they undertake with human beings are similar for all urban voids and for all individuals? On the basis of environmental perception and representation studies, we question the emptiness of urban voids and we propose a new perspective for the analyses of these spaces, based on the concepts of lived space, intersubjectivity and multiple vision of space. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the influence of urban voids and individuals’ characteristics in the process which led to the creation of their mental image and, finally, which determinate the spatial behaviour of citizens toward these marginal spaces. It is our belief that the understanding of these relations would improve the of urban voids and an integrated management, coherent with the ambiguous nature of these spaces and with their territorial framework. The Lagoinha, a traditional neighbourhood of Belo Horizonte (MG) which during last decades suffered from spatial and social mutilation, has been chosen as study case. Here, we combined the objective inventory, characterization and mapping of urban voids, with the study of individual vision of urban voids, aiming to highlight differences and complementarities between these approaches. Making urban void’s attenders an active part of the analysis enabled us to reveal their values, needs, feelings and expectations towards theses lived spaces.
